Finnish people have been using spruce resin salve for hundreds of years already. Traditionally it has been used for wound healing but it is also good for dry and cracked skin. The first Scandinavian observation of the spruce resin salve is found in Swedish medical book of Benedictus Olain. There is a reference from the year 1578, where the spruce resin salve was advised to use for healing the leg ulcers. In some hospitals and rest homes in Finland they use spruce resin salve for leg ulcers and bedsores in nowadays too. 

Multidisciplinary research has been carried out of the spruce resin salve and its mechanism of action. The spruce resin salve has been found to have anti-bacterial effects. It also has been found to have a purifying effect on multiresistant hospital bacteria such as MRSA.
